WAIPU.
The nominations of members for the different highway boards for the, district took place during the past week, and elections for these are no contests. It was a matter of some difficulty to master enough candidates to fill the required number. The interest taken in local politics. is diminishing every year, and I never noticed such unwillingness to take a share in the administration of local government as on the present occasion. The workiug of the new Road Boards Act helped to confuse and make ratepayers reluctant or unwilling to assume duties merely nominal, but which frequently cause the holders of office to come in for a good deal of unpopularity when they cannot perform impossibilities. The nomination for. the middle highway board took place on the 21st inst., at Mr. D. Munro's residence, the returning officer, when the following five gentlemen were nominated and elected :—Messrs. M. W. McKenzie, W. M. McDonald, D. McLean, J. Finlayson, and JET. McDonald. Tenders for various works on the main lino of road have been accepted by the councillors for this riding, but with the present state of the weather, and the near approach 1 of winter, it will be useless to waste money to J carry on the works under the presentJcircumstances.—[Own Correspondent, April 25.1
