The effect of dredging in the port of Ly ttelton is thus stated : —ln 1867, a line drawn from the Officers Point breakwater to a point three chains seaward of Peacock's Wharf, gave an average depth of 9ft., and this state of things continued up till 1874, when the dredging commenced. At the present time, soundings taken along the same line give an average of lSJft. of water, and the water in the enclosed area deepens to 20ft. and 21ft. towards the opening between the moles.
