TARANAKI V. SECOND ELEVEN OF AUCKLAND. Tiie second match apainat a representative team of Auckland was commenced oil the Domain ground yesterday. On account of the rain which fell on the previous day, and yesterday morning, no very larg'.- scores were expected on either aide. The wi ket played very badly all the day, and enabled the bowlers to heat the batsmen ofteni-r than they should have done. Ttie game did not start till after 12 o'clock, and th?a sever.*! of the local players were absfiitt and substitute filled their places in the field m< st efficiently. Mumford was elected captaiu for Auckland, and coin, upon being spun, went against him, and his men h*d to take the field. Gle son being indisp s-d, the emergency man, Mills, took his place. The Auckland b..wl ng was not up to the mark at times, and batsmen should have made more runs than they <■ i■ I. As matters staud now Auckland will not head the visitor* total on the first iun'ng J , having two wickets to fall aud 45 runs to get. The wicket-ke. pin^ - of Kmc; was excellent. The match will be r. sinned this morning. The following are a few details of the play :—Bere>fonl aud PaTington represented Tarauaki at the wickets. Meldrum opened the ball by sending down the " si onewaller " a maiden. Lankham did the same to Parrington. After 4 maidens had been trundled, Beresford got Meldrum away to square leg for 2. Parrington dtove Meldrum along the carpet for 3, and he drove Lankham prettily to the on for 2 ; but the bowler had his revenge by clean bowling him with the next ball. The score iead S—l—s as Cunningham joined Berr sford, and drive Lankham for 3. In the next over the same batsuian cut Meldrum prettily for two singles, but becoming too anxious to score, he missed one from Meldrum. auM g*ve King a chance, who removed his very prettily: 17 —- —6. Foley was tv.e new man, and opened hit', record by driving L inkham to the olf for 2. Kiug, who was in iiis best form got another wicket by catching Foley low down behind the stumps off i.unkham : 22—3—2. Rend filled the vacancy, and put La ikham away splendidly t • leg, but only a single resulted. The field icing well placed. Meldrum, at square leg, sfcjp; ed a very hot one from B re3for<l. Lankham bowled a noball, which ltead converted into a run Bea I drove Meldrutn gnudly foi 3. Beresford punished the same bowler to leg !or a like number. Meldrum was now shunted for Whiteside, who disposed of Read in his second. The batsman played rather late, and put the ball on to bis wicket : 43 — 4 —9. Contts took the remainder nf the over. Beresford, who bad been pla\ ingvery s'eadily, now cut Whiteside for a .single. The stonewaller punished Lankham to leg for 3, and broughi aO up outh j board. Coutts by a nice forward drive put Lankham away for 3. The same batsman cut Whiteside nic ly for a couple. In the next over the bowlers changed ends. Beresford got a long hop away to squ releg for 2, and the telegraph read liO. Coutts now stepped out and drove Lankham for a brace. Mills took the leather from Whiteside, and Beiesford put his fir.st ball to leg for 1, but the next b .11 Coutts drove back into Mill"' hands. He had played t rilliantly for 12 : OS—i) —12. Riddifnrd, the captain, now joined the " stonewatler," who was playing good cricket, with an excellent defence. Ividdiford was honied off lis ribs by Mills in his next over : (iS -G—o. G. Bayley next faced Mills. G. Lankham wai now removed for Meldrum. G. Bayley opened hißshoulders and drove Mills to longon for 3. In the next over G. Bayley lifted one from Meldrum into tteid's hands at extra mid-otf: 81—7—7. F. Hayley broke his " duck" with a single off Mills, but in the next over he put Meldrum into MacCormicu'a hands at mid-on : S4—S—2. Berreaford was now 37 and it looked like a not out for him. Matheson made his first score with a single oil' a short pitched ball from Mills. Berresford got Meldrum off the ground to leg for 8. Mills now took the south et.d. Meldrum sent down some slows, aud Matheson put him into Abel's hands at point : 95—0—4. Fulton, the last man, now joined Berresford. Fulton got Meldrum to leg for a couple. The " stonewaller" also got Meldrum to the on for a couple, and the first century was registered. The last wicket proving rather expensive, Meldrum was shunted for Lankham. Fulton put his leg where his bat ought to be to Mills, and the innings closed fur a total of 104. Berresford bad played a most careful innings for 49. His play was most meritorious considering the state of the wicket. After a short interval, during which the wicket was swept and rolled. King and Blair made their appesranc", to the bowling to Matheson, whose first lr 11 was a no ball; from the second a single resulted. F. Bayley trundled from the hospital end. His third ball was a short-pitched one, and beat Blair : 2—l—l. King flurrifd the field by running a short one, but the next over from F. Bayley was too good for King, who in trying to play him to leg, lost his wicket : 3—2—l. Reid by a late cut opened his score with 2. C. MacC .rmick was bowled with a tricky one oft' his legguards by Matheson : 5—3 —1. There was great exultation in the field now at the speedy disposal of the wickcts. Reid opened his shoulders, and lifted Matheson to the long field for 3. The same batsman got F. Bailey nicely to leg for a couple. Matheson sent down a maiden, Isaac gave a hard chance to Cunningham at mid on off Matliest.n. Reid now snicked F. Bayley into Beresford's at short slip : 20—4—10. Whiteside drove Matheson grandly for 3, F. Bayley beat him with his first ball, just removing his bail : 24—5—3. " Mum," the captain, joined Isaac, aud was clean bowled by F. Bayley's third ball : 24—ti—0. Dewes tilled the vacancy and put Matheson to the on for a couple. He punished the same bowler for a like number. His next ball he drove beautifully for 4. He lifted him again for 3. Dews got F. Bayley to square leg for 2. Matheson was now removed for G. B.iyley. Dewes got him to leg for 4., and brought 40 in sight. Dewes got long a hop ;rom G. Bayley which went to leg for 3. He puuished F. Bayley with the same stroke for a like number, and 50 was hoisted ou the board. Dewes was clean bowled by F. Bayley after knocking up 25 by hard hitting, at a very critical time of the game : 52—7—25. G. Lankham faced F. Biyley, and placed him for a single. Isaac pnt one from F. Bayley into Cunningham's hands at mid on: 59—8—14. L. Meldrum joined Lankham, who finished the over, and the stumps were drawn for the day.
