THE REPORTED DIAMOND DISCO VERY.
LETTER FROM SIR JULIUS VOGEL. In reference to the reported discovery of diamonds, a gentleman in .Auckland has received the following letter from Sir Julius Vogel:—
" Dear Mr. , I observe in the papers rumours of the discovery of diamonds in Auckland. 1 by ac.-ident have with me an uncut diamond, found at Kimberiey, in South Africa, and as it may possess peculiar interest at a time vvlk-ii the rumours of diamond discoveri-s are iioating about, I it to you to asl: you to present it to the Museum r.t Auckland, or to m.-'ke such public use of it as may best be of service. I have lonj felt that there is a stiong piobability that diamonds will be discovered iti New Zealand. Two ir.ost i miiieiit authorities, Dr. Percy and Professor Warrington Smyth, have told me to expect tiieir existence from scientific data, mil I have met South African explorers who knew Nc.v Zealand, and predicted the same. Even it the present rumours are un'oiinded, I should still think a search for diamonds may sooner or liter be successful. I hope you will excuse my asking you to be the medium of this donation. You may make such use of this note as seems best to you.— I am. &c., .JCLirs Vi't'.El.." The specimen above referred to may be seen at the Institute.
