Much of tin; news lias been anticipated by the Press Association, but Mr. Bryce further states that the natives not only received them with a Maori welcome, but also gave them lit arty British cheers as the Stella dropped her anchor in the Kawhia harbour. There is IS feet of watt r on the bar at low tide, and ;; good channel past the proposed township, with futir fathoms just opposite the township, close in shore. The lr.nl owned by the Government is considered the best available for a town site. The principal chief of the district pointed out the ground to Messrs. Bryce and Rollestcn, and natives are acting as surveyors' chainmen. A survey of the town is now proceeding. It is to be called Kawhia, and the p:mcij.»al street Tainui, after one of the first canoes that went to Kawhia. No difficulty is appieheuded, either as regards the surve}*, sale, or occupation. 1c is estimated that wh< n the road is made joining Kawhia to Alexandra, the journey can easily be performed in eix hours.
