THE LYTTELTON REGATTA.
[BV TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] Lyttklton, Monday. Tin: annual regatta was held to-daj', the weather being fine. Au immense number of people visited the port, the trains being kept very busy. The port looked very gay, and the shipping was all gaily dressed. For the pulling races the weather was all that could be desired, though there was not enough win for the sailing races. For the Yacht there were three entries—Thetis, of Wellington ; Don, of Lyttelton ; and Zephyr, of Akaroa. The wind was very light throughout the race, which was won by the Zephry, the Thetis taking second prize, the Don having given time allowance. Don and Thetis finished with only Ssecs difference between them. 111 the Inter-provincial Fouroared Out-rigger Race, prize £125, AVellington, Ivatipo, Lyttelton, and the Canterbury and Union Clubs competed. After a grand race of three miles, the Katipo won by two laDgths, Lyttletou being second, Wellington third, Canterbury fourth, and the U. R.C. fifth. The Ship's Boat Pulling Race was taken by the Othello in a field of four. The ISaval Brigade Race, in which three crews competed, was won by Petty Officer Hicks' boat. In the Sailing Race, open boats, four boats competed. The Dauntless, of Lyttelton, was first, and the Dream, of Akaroa, 3ccond. In the Double Sculling Race, prize £15, Timaru, Kaiapoi, and two Christchurch crews entered. Evidently all the buoys could not have been placed the same distance from the starting buoy, and much dissatisfaction was felt thereat. The race was taken by the Timaru, Kaiapoi being second, and Lyttelton third. In the •Ships' Boats Sailing Race there were four entries and the race was won by the Hurunui. Loch Cree being second. In the Ladies' Purse Four-oared Outrigger Race, first prize £15, Lyttelton, Christchurch, and Kaiapoi competed. The course was two miles. The Canterbury Rowing Club took the first prize, and Kaiapoi the second prize, £5. For the Pair-oared Race, first prize £i 0 and Mayor's Cup, second prize £3, five crews entered — Kaiapoi, Lyttelton, Timaru, and two Christchurch clubs. Course, two miles. The race was pulled in somewhat lumpy water, the wind having freshened by the time it was started. The Lyttelton crew took first prize, and Kaiapoi the second, the other boats not finishing. In the Single Scalling Race, prize £5, Kaiapoi, Lyttelton, and Canterbury Club 3 completed. A fine race ensued between Lyttelton and Kaiapoi, but Kaiapoi' proved the best, and won the race easily. The Coasters' Race, prize £50 and cup, had four starters—Mary King ;73 tons), Clematis (07 tons). Mary Ellen (2!) tons), and Catherine (14 tons). The wind was very light indeed, when the race was started at half-past twelve p.m., and continued so until half-past three, when it freshened from the iS'.E. Tlu; Catherine took the lead at tho stjrt, and owing to the lightness of the wind kept it throughout, winning tho race at half-past six p.m. The course was one inside the harbour, twice round. Everything in connection with the regatta passed off most satisfactorily, no accident occuring. The Union Company's steamer Rotorua was kindly placed at the disposal of the committee as a flagship, and was moored out in the inner harbour near the entrance. Every convenience for the committee and others connected with the regatta was provided on board. Sports were held a3hore, which were largely attended and well competed. In the evening there was a torchlight procession and display of fireworks by the Fire Brigade, which brought the day's proceedings to a close.
