SUPPLY OF FISH.

TO THE EDITOR. Su:, —I was interested in Mr. Harrow's letter on ''Fish" iu Monday's Herald, being much to the point. It has induced me to pen the following, hoping it may prove of benefit to the public on a subject so overlooked or apparently so i.y those who profess so much in getting cheap fish in plentiful supply. The scallop tn-h is moet ilmndant on the sandy shores round Auckland and the North Shore, being the most excellent of shell fish, and thought by many ir. England to be quite equal in eatiug as lobster or crab. It is sold as low as lOd per dozen ; season, three months. In Auckland the fishermen do not trouble themselves. Crabs — I have been informed by fishermen here, that they have caught then, (from description), from lib. to 21hs. each at sea. The lamprey in the YVaikato could be obtained in iarj;e quantities, which when potted is one of the richest delicacies in potted fish. Forty years ago it was very dear iu England, being only obtained in the. Severn at Gloucester. It is now extinct, or was a short time since. IE Mr. Firth would but have spent one-tenth of the money he has spent iu wlmon in getting out suitable men for the above fisheries from the south coast in Englaud, he would, have been a great benefactor to the fisheating community. Salmon will never do here. At Home a friend of mine tried to get salmon again in the Avon. The late Professor Buckland came down several times to try aud arrange things, bringing the ova, and seeing to its being properly cared for. He had it kept in large reservoirs three years. They did not thrive ; the country was too warm. Now, the white salmon is abundant in the Avon, beiDg fine sport with, the roil, fish often being caught to 301bs. weight. This fish would do well here in the Waitemata.—l am, &c., Tiium.ik Spencer, Parnell.
