A fire broke out at Child's Cabinetmaking and Steam-turning Works this afternoon. When discovered the tire had a good bold of the roof, and wasextinguished with uifncu'.ty, and not before the upper portion of the building had been destroyed. 'The building was insured in the Norwich Union for £300. The stock, &c., was uninsured. The origin of the lire is supposed to have been from a spark alighting on the roof. WELLIX(;TijX, Tuesday. A stevedore named Francis Scoring was very severely injured while working ca a vessel at the wharf last i.ight, by a heavy iron hook striking him on cue back of the head. The Harbour Board employes having formed themselves into a branch of the Otage Trades and Labour League, asked Mr. Fish, M.H.R., to be president, but he has replied declining owing to his being r. member cf the Harbour Board, consequently cue of their employers. The Shamrock Hotel at Ti::."a was offered by auction to-Jay and passed in at .Cli-tOO. The carnival continues to be largely patronised. The committee have fi»:ed Saturday for their costume cricket match, and have been remoubtrate.l with by t!:e Jockey Club, as it is the second day of their spring meeting. However, the carnival pople have rsplied regretting their inability to postpone their affair. There seems to be some feeling imported into the matter. Mr. M. Donnelly, journalist, will be a candidate for the Peninsula. A case of great hardship came before, the Police Court to-day. A woman named 2dontague sued her husband for £10 due on an order for her maintenance. She had four children, and £100 was due to her upon the order. She wns now unable to work to support her children, and her husband was living with another woman b}- whom he had four children. The magistrate adjourned the ease for a fortnight, the husband that if he did not pay by then he would be sent to gaol for six months. Constable O'Dwyer, who saved Mrs. Kitchen's life at the fatai ri:e in Cumber-land-street some time ago. was to-night presented by the City Council with a silver Maltese cross in recognition of his deed. Mr. D. A. Graham, tiie i;-'w L'ns engineer of the City Council, has arrived, and takes charge of the works. The Cromwell Company's three weeks" crushing yielded io'Jozs. retorted gold from 305 tons. BALCLUTII A, Tuesday. The Agricultural Show to-day was very successful. The weather was iiue, and there was a large attendance. Stock horses :a.d sheep were especially good.
