Ever since the weights appeal fid. Sting has occupied a prominent place in the betting, and his party being very sanguine of tho result, backed him to win a good stake. When the kst mail left Sydney, he was Becond favourite at 100 to 10, so that his win will give backers a turn in. Sting is a halfbrother to the sensational Waxy, and baa an unbeaten record. His first appearance was at Orange, where ho won the Town Plate, 1J miles, carrying 7at. lib., iu 2mm. 49socs., and at the same meeting won the Jockey Club Handicap, 2 miles, with 7st. 3lbs. in the saddle, in 3min. 4Usecs. At Gulgong ho won the Handicap. 1A miles, and at Mudgee he again earned his owner's colours to the fore :.n the Turf Club Handicap, 1J miles, with Sst. 51bs. up, in 2min. 46secs. Sting is engaged in both the Metropolitan Handicap and Melbourne Cup, and by his victory on Saturday incurs a 51b. penalty for each of these events. His weight, therefore, will be raised to Sst. lib. in the former, and 7st. lOlbs. in the latter.
Masquerade started six times last season, winning once. He, too, was backed to win a good stake by his stable iu the Hawkesbury Handicap. He is engaged in the Metropolitan Handicap with Cst. Britisher previously had au unbeaten certificate. He started four times last season, winning all his engagements, his best performance being in the Forbes Jockey Club Handicap, in which event he carried 7st. 21bs. to victory, compassing the two miles in 3min. 42secs. Britisher is engaged in the Metropolitan Handicap with 6st. lOlba. PfI.ETON'.
