;. QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, June 14. , At Maryborough, on the 13th, a man entered the shop of Mr. Nightingale, and asked for a revolver. On being supplied with it he loaded the weapon, and stated his intention, ot . sticking-up the Joint Stock Bank. ,Mr. Nightingale attempted to leave the shop, but the man bailed him up, and he eventually bolted without paying. This morning the same man entered the Joint Stock Bank, and fired a shot at the accountant, Mr. Male, who immediately drew a revolver and fired three times. The man was seized by the bystanders. , Nobody was hurt. On being arrested the man informed the police his name was Maurice O'Brien', an American. He is supposed to be insane. The brig' Syren, bound for Sydney, with timber, which left Kaipara on May 20, experienced a heavy gale on June 1. The ressel shipped several heavy . geas, which ■washed overboard two seamen named Joshua Walker and George Sidoy, carrying away a deck load of timber, with everything on deck, and smashing the long boat Another sea stove in the stern, and carried away the mate, W. E. Brown. It being impossible to make Sydney in this disabled condition, the Syren stood for Moreton Bay, in company with the Spirit of the Dawn, and which port she reached safely. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. : . Adelaide, June 14. ' The officer who had charge of the drainage works in the south-east has been arrested on a charge of ombezzling Government money. The irregularities are supposed to have been going on for a considerable time.

At the last meeting of the Kapunda Corporation, Councillor Morton ■ used offensive language, and refused ; to_ withdraw ■ the words. At to-night's meeting he again declined to withdraw them, and a motion to fine him £10 was carried. Morton immediately threw down a £50 note, requesting the fine to be taken out of it.

The Government expect to introduce lower passenger'rates, abolishing third-class fares, about the beginning of August. The delay is mainly owing to the time required for necessary alterations to the present thirdclass carriages.
