The Fierce Competition at present raging in commercial circles at heme, is nowhere more noticeable than amonsst the manufacturers of velveteens. The result is an article of superior finish remarkable alike for its brilliancy and softness of tone. The new shades, " Petunia," " Peacock," Maroon, &c, in the " Amarant" make ; as, also, in a remarkably cheap black, are on view at J. M. McLachlan's, 222, Queen-streot, opposite McArthui and Co.'s large warehouse, and next to Messrs. Cruickshank and Miller's, where a cash sale is now being held. After reviewing the progress that has been made by science in the development of electricity for the purposes of lighting, &c, I will next consider what has been done by engineers and other scientific and practical men in the development of gas for lighting, cooking, and other important purposes. And here I would say that great as has been the stride made with electric lighting, even greater has been the development attained in gas lighting; and as the electric light is considered by many to be only in its infancy, so I feel sure also that the same thing may be said of gas lighting—that is to say, gas lighting conducted upon scientific principles, which hitherto have been strangely overlooked —not to mention the vast field of usefulness which is gradually being opene'l out to it in the direction of cooking, domestic and furnace heating, and as a surce of power.— Inaugural Address Society of Engineers, 6th February, SS2.
