WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
(FROM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Hamilton, Saturday. It is understood that the work of taking the evels of the centre block west of Victoriaitreet, will be entrusted to Mr. W. C. Breakell, with a view to laying out an effective system of drainage, which is much, leeded. The feeling of the burgesses, however, is decidedly against the various proper;iesinthis block, which isbounded by Victoria, jOllingwood, Auglesea, and Hood - streets, Dp.ing drained at the public expense. What s considered right is that the borough should De at the expense of forming a main outlet Irain, say from Hintou's gully into the block, ind that the side drains required for the Irainage of the various properties in the block should be constructed,at the expense Df the several owners. Daniel O'Brien, the half-crazy vagabond with a monomania for fire-raising, who has only just been released from the Te Aroha lock-up, was sent down to Hamilton in charge. of Constable Brennan, having been sentenced by Colonel Lyon, J.P., for three months as a vagrant. A meeting of the Tamahere Highway Board was held on Wednesday, when a rate of Is in the pound was struck. The recent decision in the South, that coaches carrying Her Majesty's mails cannot be charged toll, will seriously affect the receipts of the Hamilton traffic bridge. Yesterday Mr. W. K. Carter declined to pay either for the Cambridge or Te Aroha,.coach, which will make a difference of some £70 or £S0 per annum to the bridge toll receipts. The Venerable Archdeacon Lush left for Auckland on Thursday, with the object of recruiting his impaired health. His duties at St. Peter's will to-morrow be undertaken by the Rev. S. H. Davis. At a special meeting of. the Borough Council, held last night, Mr. Calderwoodwas appointed Engineer to the Board, though only for a short time. Until an expression of public opinion has been taken, the special work contemplated, the taking the levels of and preparing plans for a complete system of drainage on the central Victoria-street block, will not be commenced. There is a strong feeling, which found expression in the Council last night, that the cost of draining the interior of the block must be done at the expense of individual property-holders benefitted, the public funds providing merely the main outlet drain up to but not into the block. To prevent the Kirikiriroa ratepayers being misled by erroneous statements elsewhere, it will be as well to repeat that the annual election of trustees will take place, not on next Wednesday, but on Wednesday, the sth of July. Nominations of candidates for Mr. Vialou's vacated seat in the Borough Council must be sent in Monday, the 26th instant. The election takes place on July 3. Ngaruawahia, Saturday. The new manager of the Waikato Fellmongery Company (Mr. Brown) has met with great success in his tour round the Waikato district, having secured the promise of by far the greater part of the skins produced in the district, and very shortly active operations will be commenced. There is some talk of starting a woollen factory on a small scale, by which the wool cleaned from the skins, as well as the refuso wool of settlers generally, instead of being sold for a mere trifle out of the district, could be worked up in blankets and other coarse material. Taueiri, Friday. At the inquest held here yesterday on the body of an old man Darned Luke Shaw, who was found dead in his bed on Wednesday morning, a verdict that death was the result of natural causes was returned. Deceased was a hushman, living in a hut by himself, and about 60 years of age. Te Awamutu, Saturday. Constable Gillies left here to-day with Dennis Boyle, an old offender, sentenced to two years' imprisonment at the Police Court here as a vagrant. At Hamilton,"Daniel O'Brien, committed at Cambridge for three months for a similar offence, will be given in charge to the constable, and both prisoners will be convoyed on to Auckland.
