NORTH SHORE GAS SUPPLY.
Many of our readers are, perhaps, not aware that the Auckland Gas Company's area of supply covers a radius of ten miles from the Post-office, or a circle, the diameter of which is twenty miles, the Post-office being the centre of the circle. The company have just purchased a piece of land on the Lake-road for the purpose of erecting gas works for the supply of gas on the North Shore. The piece of land selected by the company's engineer is, we hear, suitable in every respect. The site, on the south side of the road to the Lake, running down to the swamp, will command the district lying west of the creek and on to the Lake, as well as the more settled portion at Devonport. As soon as the weather will permit, operations will be commenced, and the buildings and works necessary for the gas plaut (the order for which was despatched by last mail) will be pushed forward, so as to enable the company to supply gas at as early a date as possible. The application for gas sent in to the directors has been very nnmerously signed by the residents at Devonport. Another advantage has thus been secured to this suburb through the hearty manner in which the question has been taken up. Mr. Alfred Cox, of Devonport, has been most indefatigable in the matter, and canvassed the district thoroughly. The price to be charged for iras has been fixed at 15s per 1000 feet. This, we hear, gives very General satisfaction, being the lowest rate at which gas has been sold at the starting of any works in Ix'ew Zealand.
