NEW STEAMER FOR THE KAIPARA. TRADE.

The directors of the Kaipara S.S. Company have considered it necessary to make some arrangement for the increased requirements of the trade to the Kaipara, and for that purpose called for. competitive designs of a large paddle eteamer, with sleeping accommodation for 49 passengers, and competent to carry about 350 on board, as well as for conveying about 50 tons of cargo, &c. It was proposed that her draught . of water should not exceed 4 feet 6 inches, and her enpines were to be surface-condensing and sufficiently powerful to propel the vessel at the rate of 12 knots per hour. A number of models and designs were sent in, and five gentlemen (two directors of the company, and three competent judges of marine architecture) were appointed to decide on the merits of each. After consideration the prize was awarded to Mr. Trevithics: for the hull and Mr. W. Loader for the engines. The designs are now to be seen at the company's office, and nautical men and others are invited to inspect them. Steam will be supplied by two circular multitubular boiler* 10 feet long with a diameter of 7 feet, and containing a heating surface of 2025*54 feet; The engines, m above mentioned, will be diagonal eompensd surface condensing, and

arranged so as to allow of each part being got at [ with facility. The high, pressure cylindar will be 20 inchee diametec ; the low, 34 inches ; and the length, of stroke in each, 3 feet 6 inches, with an indicated horse-power of about 342, at 46 revolutions. All the framing of the vessel will be made of wrought iron, and arranged bo that the stringers for carrying the weight of the machinery will prevent her getting out of shape amidships.
