AN "INTERESTING EVENT."
App.oi'Oß to tlie departure of the big African elephant from the gardens at Regent's Park, Land and Water has an interesting auuounccinent to make. One of the young Indian elephants is shortly expected to be the mother of the first elephant ever known to be born in Kurope, at any rate in modern times. Whether elephants were born in Europe during the days when if was the fashion for the Romans of the empire to import vast numbers of elephants as well as the larger earnivora for their games, triumphs, and other public spectacles, we do not now stop to inquire. Certainly in modern days there is no record of an elephant having been born in Europe. The expected event, therefore, is anticipated with peculiar interest at the Zoological Hardens. With respect to the production of a native born-elephant, America has got the start of us, as in a travelling menagerie about a year ago One was born in the United States.
