[PEK S.S. WAKATIPU, AT WELLINGTON.] NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, March 14. The strike at Newcastle continues, but the danger of it spreading is considered now improbable. a. tramway accident occurred at Gamden yesterday, caused by the non-adjustment of the points, in consequence of which the motor ran into the blind siding, and collided with ballast waggons. The motor and car next it were completely raised to the ground by the force of the concussion. The passengers were severely shaken, but there were no serious injuries. Another engine on the same line ran into three cattle, and cut them to pieces. The two adventurers, Rodwayand Wilson, were committed for trial yesterday for obtaining money under false pretences, by advertising jewellery and plate for sale, and sending rubbish in exchange for the money. The Marine Board has suspended the certificate of the captain of the ketch Ksther Maria for three months, for negligence when run down by the steamer Kameruka. VICTORIA. Melhouknk, March 14. The libel action David Gaunson against the Federal Australian and the Ararat Advertiser was settled, each paying their own costs. The ship Sobraon was reported on the 19th February on voyage all well. Major Geach recovered £725 for injuries at the" Jolimout collision. The detective force is being thoroughly reorganised and strengthened. Near the river Murray, the stock is perishing by hundreds in consequence of the scarcity of water. There have been only six inches of rain during the last nine months, the average being 24. QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, March 14. Michael Callighan was arrested ac Burdekin bridge for the murder of John Hughes, whom he knocked into a railway cutting during a quarrel.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, March 14. An inquiry has commenced into the recent great fire in Rur-dell-street. Water at Cork's Peninsula is very scarce, retailing at a shilling per hogshead. A shipment of water was sent to Moonta direct. The insurance conspiracy case is proceeding in the Police Court. Drs. Steeling and Gosse aver that a medical man could not honestly report, and failed to observe the symptoms of phthisis while the disease was in its last stage.
