NAPIER, Wednesday. There is a great scarcity of carpenters. The building trade is brisk in town and country. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Captain Tozer, of the s.s. Rotorua, was on the last passage from Melbourne presented by the passengers with a purse of sovereigns, as a token of gratitude for the kindness and courtesy shown them while on board the Rotorua. When visiting the Sounds on the West Coast, Captain Tozer showed his passengers every point of interest, much to the gratification of those on board. Mr. Tread well's libel action against the Telegraph has been settled by the late proprietor apologising, and admitting that the offence and allegations were untrue, and invented purely for electioneering purposes. Mr. John Grigg has been elected chairman of the Frozen Meat Company. The Now Zealand Shipping Company have replied to their application for the Mataura, that she has been placed at the disposal of the Dunedin Company, whom they had considered had a prior claim. It was decided to order A. Haslam's dry air refrigerating apparatns at once, and advertise for sites for the company's works.

DUNEDix, \Yednesdav. , Mr. Proudfoot has now definitely arranged to put his city and suburban tramway into a company. At to-day's meeting of the Land Board the following resolution was passed:—"That the Board are impressed with the desirability of some of their members visiting without delay the runs and portions of runs which have been reserved for settlement, with the view of recommending the Government as to the best mode of dealing with the same, but, before doing so, would wish to bo informed whether any expenses which may be incurred in connection with such inspection will be defrayed by the Government without the very inconvenient delay which has been experienced on previous occasions. Mr. R. Quinn, secretary of the Benevolent Institutions, has taken proceedings against Mr. Hitchcock, who made himself so prominent in the inquiry some time ago for criminal libel. No Easter encampment can be held in Otago, the Government having advised Captain Stavely that they.have no teuta. The Judge this morning refused to grant a new trial in Mayo v. Queen, arising out of the Kensingtou R-ailway accident, mainly on the ground that the train was travelling at an excessive rate of speed. INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. The Court-house at Riverton was burned ''own this morning. There was great difticulty in preventing the fire from spreading vo the Post and Telegraph-offices. Divers are still engaged seeking to recover the silver lost in the Tararua. The weather is now more favourable to their operations, which they are hopeful will yet be successful.
