At a meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, on March 2, the following papers were read : —'' Additions to the MOl - luscan Fauna of Isew Zealand," by Professor Hutton ; and " On Earthquake Phenomena," by J. D. Enys. In connection with the first paper, the author gave an interesting statistical abstract relative to the discovery of the various species of mollusca of New Zealand up to the present time. Mr. Enys, in his paper, adverted to a singular disturbance which had been observed in a lake near Castle Hill, shortly after the recent severe shock of carthquaqe. Two columns of water rose in the middle of the lake to a height of about four feet, and continued in action for a considerable time. At the ball to the representatives of the various rifle corps at Nelson, Major Baillie feelingly referred to the recent dastardly attempt, by a marlman, on the life of Her Majesty, and gave expression to the universal joy at her escape from harm.
