The Ar-gyie did not leave for Whangart-i yesterday afternoor. . The Uuioa S.S. Co.'i s.s. Rtngarooms. arrived from Melbourne, via Southern ports, at 3.15 p.m. yesterday. We are indebted to Mr. Moore, purser, for latest files and the following report Experienced tine we.ther up the coast to Napier. Thence strong N.E. winds with heavv sea, accompanied with thick rainy wea-her. The Ringaroorna proceeds to Kussell at 5 o'clock this afternoon. Tne barque Antares finished loading for London yesterday. THE GALE. The easterly gale, which was referred to in Testerday's publication, increased in violtmc-; during the day, interfering with shipping operations. The Argyle, which arrived from Whiugarei yesterday morning, reports a very dirty passage—one of the worst in the master's experience. The vessel rolled greatly, and tbu sails were torn so much as to be rendered useless. The Argyla did not leave last night. The Enterprise did" no: make her usual trip to the Thames on Monday night. The little sleamers plying in the harbour had rough work yesterday. Al times the North Shore boats, especially the Devonport, seemed to tcarce'iy move. All of them dipped considerably, heavy seas bein:; shipped when the gale became violent. Disaster befel the slow-going bat noisy Scotchman. About 11 o'clock yesterday morning shewas near the wharf, trying to makeheadwiy against wind and tide, but she apparentlv might as well have been at anchor. Mr. John Lamb, her owner, beckoned to bring her alongside under lee of the wharf. Her direction was changed, but then she rolled greatly, so much so, that the boat in her davits seemed inclined to turn right ovpr. As the rolling con'inued, the chimney-stack went by the board. Eventually she was moored in safety at the •wharf. Tfte RinjjAroom-*, which arrived yesterday afternoon, from Gisborne, reports a heavy sea, with wind on her beam, and thick, dirty weather till near port. Little or do damage seems to have been sastsiiued by the shipping, although not a few have anJergDne a severe bumping. However, having ample warning, the masters had made matters as snug as possible, in anticipation of weather. Rain began to fall not heavily, but pretty constantly, last night about 10 o'clock, which had the effect of diminishing the force of the wind. Men of experience express au opinion that these storms are the equic*oxial gales. - FORI* </F O>*KH(KNGA. DEPARTURE. Penguin, 5.?., Anderson, for Southern ports.
