SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. ALLEN AT PUKEKOHE.
I have to record the death of Mr. Alfred E. Allen, a gentleman who for the past two years lias resided in our midst. He purchased a portion of lot 9 formerly belonging to Mr. Alfred Bueklaud, comprising 7SO acres. There has been erected a commodious residence with every necessary outbuildings, great improvements carried out, and the estate was just beginning to look well when death terminated his eai-tbly career. Ho was ,1 gentleman greatly respected by all who knew him, and ::iore so by those who had the pleasure of hi.s intimate acquaintance. He was a kind aud considerate father, a loving husband, and good master. He was treasurer of our local Highway Board, and has carried out great improvements in that portion of the district he represented, since being a member of that body. He was a great acquisition to our district, being always ready and willing to assist in promoting anything for the good of the district. His death was awfully sudden, and east a great gloom over tiie district. He rode out on Sunday afternoon to see r.friei'd, returned home for tea, and retired to rest in his usual health. He was taken ill during the night, and by 5 a.m. on Monday had paid the great debt of nature. His remains, followed to Buckland station by a great i number of sympathising friends on horseback and on foot, were taken to Newmarket by the midday train, where, on arrival, a hearse and mourning carriage were in waiting to convey them to the Symonds-street Cemetery, where they were interred.—[A Correspondent, March 13.]
