MESSRS. PORTER AND CO.'S NEW WAREHOUSES.

Amosv. other city improvements v.-e notice that Messrs. K. Porter and Co. are about to erect a block of brick warehouses in Highstreet, for which tenders arc now invited in onr columns by Mr. I*. Herapath, architect, who has prepared the plans. From an inspection of the plans, we gather that the new block will have a frontage to High street of 00 feet, extending from the angle of their present three-storeyel buiUUni; (formerly occupied by Messrs. Cruicksha'nk and Co,) to the corner of the back entrance of the Auckland Hotel. The buildings have a depth of 70 feet, and are two storeys in height, exclusive of the basement. Tho height from apex oi roof to basement is 43 feet. The cellarage is 14 feet in the clear, and has an area of 4S x UG, the ground and first Doors of equal area, bein« each 10 foet in height. This is known as No. 2 division. No. 1 warehouse is situated over the present iron yard. The ground and first door of this division have each an area of 07 x 37. G. The upper floors of the warehouse ara supported by storey posts and girders, with iron flitches alternating. The warehouses arc divided into three spaus, each with double gates for inward and outward delivery, and communication is effected between the divisions by means of iron doors. The roof will be of corrugated iron. There are two hydraulic lifts for hoisting goods from cellar to upper floor. A travelling crane, !) feet -.vide, running on " ways," 50 feet long, will be placed ou the ground floor next to the present store, and will he used for hoisting heavy weights and for convenience of storage in store. The new building will be lighted by a series of segment headed windows. It is proposed to finish the facade in white and red brick, tuck pointed. The angles of the gateways will be protected by rusticated scoria quoins from the base up to the spring of tho arches. The cellars are lighted by four large windows with iron gratings and guards. Ail axed-urcssed base course runs through the whole frontage. The rusticated pilasters and cornices are in red and white bricks. It is the intention of Messrs. Porter and Co., at no distant date, to build a block of warehouses to thesame extent of frontage, in Queenstreet, four storeys in height, and tho floors of the warehouses a'lout to be erected now have been fixed at such a level as will make them coincide with the general plan of the Queen-street block, when that division is undertaken and completed.
