A boy named John Conuell, 11 years of age, was arrested to-day, chargad with stealing £4 from the dwelling of a man named Simpson. The boy had spent a portion of the money, liuyiug sweetmeats, pipes, and tobacco. He had entered the house by raising a window. NELSON. Tuesday. A jockey club has been formed here. The stewards are—General Davidson, R. Moßae, Woldham, Percy, Adams, J. Donald, P. H. Blundel, John Sharp (treasurer), Captain Webb (secretary). The Acclimatisation Society agreed to open the deer-stalkiug season from the 21st of February to the 23rd of March. Stags are ocly to be shot. The license foe is £1. The society distributed 5000 trout last season, HQKITIKA, Tuesday. The Hon. Mr. Rolleston, Minister of Mines, left Hokitika for Christchurch this morning. Deputations from the various local bodies waited on him yesterday. He expressed his gratification at the cordial reception he had met with on the coast, Mr. Wakefield, Under Secretary, accompanied him.

CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The body of the man Heury Thomas was found lying dead at the Barr Hill Hotel yesterday, and was taken charge of by the police. A yery serious accident occurred at a quarter past six o'clock this evening to Mr. Urierson, senior. He was riding on the boxseat of an omnibus, plying to the cricket ground, when a collision occurred, and Grierson was thrown off, !iia head striking the kerb, inflicting a severe injury. Dr. Prims was soon in attendance. Meantime the sufferer had been moved to Mr. B. Hall's house. Though the injuries are serious, there are hopes of recovery. An exciting chase after a debtor occurred, to-day. Having failed to comply with the demand of a judgment summons, he had been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, and was being marched off by a couple of bailiffs. He was ordered to get in a fourwheeler, which he did, and promptly got out at the other side. The bailiffs gave chase, and a fine run resulted—dodging round corners, and in and out of alleys, the debtor eventually getting clear off. At a meeting of the householders last night, there was a strong expression of opinion against the present system of electing Boards of Education. The principle was affirmed that committees should have votes on a sliding scale, according to the number of children.

TIMARU, Tuesday. An inquiry into the wreck of the City of Cashmere was resumed this morning. Several witnesses were examined to show that the vessel bumped before any attempt was marie to tow her out. The point oa which, there was a conflict of evidence was as to whether the ship could not have been kedged back to her place. This the witness considered somewhat doubtful. The inquiry was adjourned for a week, to enable the lost cable to be lifted, and one portion has been picked up. The chain was buried in clay and silt. The Harbour-master says the diver must dig it out. The hull wa3 offered for sale yesterday, and only £100 was bid for it. The vessel was bought in by the captain for the owners, to be offered again. OAMARU, Tuesday. A meoting of Justices of the Peace was held in the Court-house to-day, at which several resolutions were passed, one being to the effect that the Justices objected to the Petty Sessions Act being in force in the district, and decided to allow the Act to remain in abeyance so far as their district is concerned. They also objected to the absence of the Resident Magistrate being more frequent by the extension of bis circuit. The Resident Magistrate holds Court at fire or six different places, and the local Justices in his absence have to conduct the business of his Court. Mr. H. J. Medlicott, for many years manager of the Bank of New South Wales, was to-day presented with a handsome gold watch by a number of friends previous to his departure for Auckland.

DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The charge of perjury against Constable O'Shea, who was the principal witness in the case against the constable convicted last Supreme Court for stealing fowls, has been dismissed by the magistrate. A .fire occurred Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, yesterday afternoon, and destroyed some seven or eight business places. The total loss is said to be £3000, half of which is covered by insurance in the Union, Victoria, and National offices. The storekeeper in whose premises it originated had gone to Invercargill in the morning, leaving the place locked up. The general opinion is that the fire was the act of an. iacendiary.
