[press association.] W ANGANUI, Taesday. A fire this morning destroyed the enginehouse at the Wanganui Sash and Door Factory. The main building had a narrow escape, but was saved by the splendid exertions of the fire brigade. No insurance. WELLINGTON", Tuesday. His Excellency the Governor and family returned from Christchurch at 5 o'clock this evening. At the Supreme Court a true bill was found against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn, for personation ; Alfred Morey, Mary Morcy, and Elizabeth Stewart, for robbery from the person. The bill against Joseph Henry Higinbottoui, personation, was thrown out. Albert Harry Nicholls, for forgery, George Thomas Skinner and Peter Newton, for horse-stealing, were acquitted. A sad accident occurred at Masterton this afternoon. A bookseller named Churchen took a nephew named Alfred Binden to sco him fell a small tree. The tree fell on the boy, who in running for safety got in the most dangerous position. He was much bruised, and it is supposed the skull is fractured. There is no hope of recovery. The Supreme Court criminal session opened this morning. The Chief Justice, in charging the Grand Jury, congratulated them on the lightness of the calendar. His remarks were unimportant. George Skinner, for forgery, was found guilty, and remanded for sentence. True bills v.*erc found against Harry Nicholls for forgery, and John McDuff 011 a charge under the fraudulent Debtors Act. An inquest will be held on the recent fire on the Terrace. NELSON, Tuesday. The foundation-stone of the new St. Mary's Church was laid on Sunday by Bishop Redwood, assisted by the Hew Fathers Garin, O'Mally, and Mahoney. There was a very large concourse of people present. A suitable address was presented to His Lordship, reference being made therein to the fact that the stone will occupy the spot on which the j Bishop determined in his own mind to become p. priest. A silver trowel, suitably inscribed, was also presented to His Lordship. The Bishop delivered an excellent address. In acknowledging the address, he referred to his having commenced his studies at St. Mary's, under the venerable Father Garin, who had been their pastor for thirtyone years. The band of the Wellington City Guards performed sacred selections during the ceremony. WESTPORT, Tuesday. The reefs at Cascade Creek (Buller river), Waimangaroa, and Mokihumi are attracting attention. The prospects are good. Many applications for leases have been made. In Charter's case, after the jury had returned a verdict of " Guilty," the Crown Prosecutor said in reply to His Honor, that the cases of embezzling were only a few selected from many. Superintendent Broliam said he iiad seen many other cheques upon which the prisoner might have been indicted. The prisoner asked if he could say a few words. His Honor said it was the proper tims for him to do so. Prisoner said, "All that I have to say, your Honor, with regard to the case of forgery is, that I must bow to the decision of the jury. With regard to the embezzlement of the money of the Building Society, I think I have proved to the directors that, though other sums were charged against me, they had no right to be so charged. At the same time my partner, Mr. Draper, is dead and gone, and I do not wish to say anything against him. Had he been alive, I should not have been here alone to stand the brunt of all this. I have a wife aud a fine young family, and I am a young man, only twenty-six years of age, and I throw myself on the clemency of the Court. As to my endeavour to escape, I am glad that I was caught, as I shall be only too glad to have the whole thing settled." Sentence was then passed. In consequence of vtiiat Charters had said at the Police Court, it was anticipated by many that he would make some disclosures affecting the position of others, but these expectations were not realised, The weather all through the holidays has Ween hot, aud generally windy. No true bill was found against Alexander McMillan for embezzlement. Charters got 4 years penal servitude for embezzlement, and 4 years for forgery, the sentences to be cumulative. The Canterbury Races yesterday were largely attended, and very successful.

A foul occurred bet\\ een the Lyttelton and Dunedin boats, and ended in a protest being entered. Captain Clogstoun, an old settler and prominent member of the Jockey Club, die£ suddenly from apoplexy yesterday. ' TIM ARU, Tuesday. A man named John Laurie, while standing on the edge of a cliff to the north of Timam to-day, was precipitated to the rocks beneath through the earth givirg way. He was seriously injured, and died shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The Customs revenue collected for the month of December amounted to £2101, showing au increase of £400 over the corresponding mouth of last year. The returns for the December quarter also show a large increase. During the month of December, 33 births, 4 marriages, aud 7 deaths, were registered in Tiinaru. BALCLUTHA, Tuesday. The inquest on the body of Mr. Woodcock, killed by the late railway accident, was held to-day. The evidence showed that! the accident occurred through a horse getting on the line. The verdict was that deatk was caused by the train going off the line. No blame was attached to the driver or the guard. The attention of the authorities is called to the defective fences. Subscriptions are being raised for Mrs. Woodoock, the mother of deceased. DUNEDIN, Tuesday, impudent robbery was committed oil Xew Year's morning at Watson's Hotel. A man went into the room of one of the boarders, who was asleep, and stole his watch and money. He then went into another room, and coolly ransacked the pockets of the occupant, a sea captain. The latter awoke, and scudded after the thief under bare poles, but the thief got away, and was afterwards arrested and committed for trial to-day. There was again a large attendance at the Caledonian games to-day. There was a slight shower in the afternoon, but otherwise the weather was fine, only very windy. A bottle was found on Sunday on the Waikouaiti beach, about thirty miles from Dunedin, containing a scrap of paper, on which was written in load pencil: "Tuesday, December 27tli, ISSI. Please send assistance as soon as possible. Shipreck about eighty miles off Cape Saunders. God help us. Captain . Whoever finds this let him send to headquarters." The police here only got it to-night. As no names are given, it may turn out to be a hoax. A young man named Barclay, aged IS, out on a. shooting excursion at Silver Stream, went into bathe and was drowned. A companion, searching for him, found him lyin«dead in the water. A fire at Cromwell destroyed Mr. Baker's shop. It was insured, with the stock, in the National Company for £600. The Caledonian gathering was attended by fully 13,000, the largest attendance yet held. Lindsay, the Victorian pedestrian, carried off the principal foot-race as he pleased. Burke won the Steeplechase oa OnDit. A large tannery firm have called a meeting of their creditors. The liabilities are heavy. A nine-roomed house in Duncan-street was burned down on Sunday. It was insured in the Standard for £300. IN\ ERCARGILL, Tuesday. A sad accident happened at the Bluff Regatta to-day. The sea being very lumpy, three outriggers capsized, with the result that one man, Mr. A. Robertson, was drowned.
