Mr. "W. J. Clarke is now at Nice, where he intends to paas the winter. Complaints are made of the train arrangements for the holiday season at Wellington. Mr Robert Stout has definitely accepted the offer of a seat at the Otago Waste Land Board. The pawnbrokers of the Unitad Kingdom 4372 in number—take in during a single year no fewer than 200,000,000 pledges. The foundation stone of the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus is to be laid on the 22nd January, at Ashburton, the Right Rev. Francis Redwood officiating. Amongst those bustled and crushed on Boxing Day at the racecourse station was the Hon. F. .Vhitaker, Attorney-General. And yet there was no reform yesterday ! The New Zealand Times says:—"lhe estimable and devoted lady, Mrs Hampsori, is again in our midet, and is cood work which is so dear to her heart. Lieutenant-Colonel E. Pearee the Commanding Officer of the New Zealand Regiment of Artillery, and of the Wellmgton district, contemplates visiting Europe at an early date. . The outhouses attached to the private residence of Mr. McGee, the governor of the Melbourne Gaol, were entered by some thieves lately, who stole a nnmber of valuable fowls. ' ' ~ , The Hon. W. Gisborne and Mrs. Gisborne, accompanied by several members of their familyf left Wellington on December 26, for England, via Melbourne, by the s.s. Rotomahana. There was quite a numerous gathering of friends to see them off and wish them bon voyage. M -r. n The xinexpected death of Mrs B. O. Haeg'tt cast quite a, gloom over Dunedm, on Christmas Day. The deceased lady was greatly respected and esteemed by all who had the good fortune to be acquainted with her, and her loss is keenly felt.-Dunedm H A al lecture on " The Catholic Church and her Influence upon Music," was delivered in St. Francis , Church, Melbourne, on December 16, by the Very Rev. Frior Butler, OCC, a Carmelite Poacher. The rev lecturer dwelt upon the fact that the> Church had in all ages recognised the deepi devotional feeling inspired by music, and had striven by all the means in her power to make it a great and mighty force in uplifting i the hearts of the faithful.
