MAN DROWNED AT MANUKAU.
DISTRESSING ACCIDENT. Tue police authorities have received information of the drowning at the Manukau yes- . terday morning of Mr. W. F. Short, woodcarver, of Exmouth-street, Newton, under the following circumstances : —Mr. Short and ilia family had been on a friendly visit to Mr. Baker, of Mangere, and on that morning "had arrived to go out fishing. Finding the ■boat was on the mangrove side of the bay, deceased and a young man named Robinson resolved to swim across and bring back the boat. Robinson reached the boat, but the deceased did not go ten yards when he called out "Oh !" and sank immediately, to never rise again. Some two hours later, when the tide went out, ~ Mr. Baker recovered the body, and took it to Onehunga to be ex amined by Dr. Scott. Of coursc, nothing was left to be done by the doctor but to pronounce life extinct, and the body was removed to deceased's residence, Newton. It is supposed that Mr. Short was seized with -cramp. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his. loss. An inquest will doubtless ■be held to-day.
