At a large and influentially attended meeting held in the Chapter House, Westminster, H.R.H. the Prince of Wales moved, "That it was desirable that a national memorial should be established iu honour of Dean Stanley, the late Dean of Westminster, in recognition of the great esteem and affection iu which he was held." The motion was warmly supported, and was unanimously carried.
An investigation into tho recent catastrophe in Vienna shows that the number of deaths caused by the burning of the Ring Theatre has been somewhat overestimated. The latest returns show that the number of persons missing, and who are believed to have perished, is SOS. The emigration to the United States lias for some time past been on such an extensive scale that great complaints have been made of overcrowding, and of the treatment extended to the passengers during the voyage. A steamer has just arrived in New York bringing a large number of immigrants, and fearful exposures have been made concerning the hardships to which they have been subjected. The Press has taken up the matter indignantly, and the authorities have promised that a full investigation shall be made.
In opposition to the evidence tendered by the prosecution from experts who had examined Guiteau, the assassin of the late President Garfield, and who declared him to be sane, the counsel for the defence has brought forward experts, who testify that Guiteau 'is suffering from delusions, and is not altogether accountable for his actions. An outrageous sejne occurred 111 Court during the time that this evidence was being given, owing to the excitement among the ipectators. Nothing has been heard of the balloon which drifted across the English Channel. Grave fears are now entertained for the safety of Walter Powell, member for Malmsbury, and other occupants. The managers of theatres in London have been officially warned to take every precaution to facilitate the escape of audiences in the event of alarm of fire occurring. Viscount Doyle, eldest son of Earl Shannon (tic), lieutenant attached to 3rd battalion of Prince Consort's Own (Rifle Brigade), now stationed in Ireland, is reported as missing from the garrison of Dublin. Uneasiness has baen felt at the inexplicable disappearance. Since the discovery of the outrage perpetrated upon the remains of Earl Crawford, steps have been taken by direction of Her Majesty to protccfc tho Royal mausoleum at i'Vogmore Park,"
