AUCKLAND COLLEGE AND GRAMMAR SCHOOL.

A special meeting of the Board of Governors was held yesterday, for the purpose of deciding upon the plans and designs sent in for the uew boarding-house in connection with tlie school. Present: Sir G. M. O'Rorke (in the chair), the Mayor, Rev. C. M. Nelson, Colonel Haultain, Messrs. Mackechnie and Dargaville. Mr. Dargaville thought that the previous resolution fixing the site at the south-west corner of the site in Symonds-street should be rescinded. His opinion was that the boarding-house should be somewhere in the suburbs. It was far better to have the boys located in a placc where the conditions of health would be most favourable, and where they could have abundance of room for playground. He thought that having the board-ing-house in Symonds-street would not operate as an inducement to parents living at a distance to send their boys to the school.

Colonel Haultain* : We have discussed the whole of this matter before. The advantages and disadvantages of having the boarding establishment in town or country havt been thoroughly considered. That being so, it would be a pity to incur further delay. The Chairman* : I concur generally with what has been stated by Mr. Dargaville. I only acquiesced in obedience to the will of the other members.

Rev. Mr. Nklso.v : Will Mr. Dargaville give his experience of a boarding-house in connection with a grammar school that is at a distance from tlie school.

Mr. Dargaville : Dunedin. Rev. Air. Nklson : There is Canterbury for instance.

The Ciiaikmax : There they arc surrounded by several hundreds of acres of land, and have taken ten acres for a playground. The Mayor : Having the school at a distance would put off some of the meals to late hours. Ido 'not think that 'would be good for boys, who should have their principal meal in the middle of the day.

Mr. Dargaville : And what is the use of that if they have not the appetite to cat it ? (Laughter.) After some further discussion it was resolved to postpone the consideration of the designs and plans sent in until the 17th of Jauuary. _______
