Mr. ft. V. Sew art has started a fish-curng establishment at Katikati. Messrs. Turner and Buddie have erected a commodious auction mart aad store in Tauranga. The .National Insurance Company have issued their sheet almanac for the next year. It is of small size, and was printed in New York. Among the probable candidates for the office of Mayor of Tauranga are mentioned Captain E. G. Norris, Mr. James Bodell, and Mr. R. C. Jordan. At a meeting of the Thames Borough Council, Messrs. Ehrenfried, Marshall, and John Wilson were elected Governors of the Thames High School. A southern paper says that Mr. Fitzgerald, of Hokitika, and Mr. E. T. Connolly, of Picton, are conspicuous for their ability, and will soon assume prominent political positions. The Northern Luminary, in noticing the departure of Mr. Hobbs from the Bay of Islands, after his two mouths canvassing of the district, says " that his horse was dj-serving of a vote of confidence." In the Patea portion of thcelectorate the numbers polled by Major Atkinson and his opponent, Mr. Hutchison, were nearly equal. The Patea people are displeased with Major Atkinson over JTaranaki Harbour business. /■' The TVanganui Chronicle of December 8 quotes the announcement in the Auckland papers of the book on " What Sir George Grey has done for the Working Man," and •iys it looks forward to the reception of the work with interest. A marriage in M2ori high life hos taken place between Hone Werahiko and a daughter of Haora te Mimiha. Hone is the pioneer prospector of Te Aroha district, to whom is due the credit of opening up that locality for gold-mining purposes. The Native Lands Court at Shortlaud still drags its weary length along. What with titles to land, succession orders, and other disputes which arise, Judge Brookfield seems to have his hands full. It is doubtful if he will conclude the business before the holidays commence. The Bangitikei Advocate says : —"As far aa one may judge by their antecedents and their published addresses, the members of the new Parliament may fairly be divided into three sections, aa follows:—Thirtyseven Oppositionists, thirteen Independenta, and forty-five Ministerialists." At the declaration of the poll for Rangitikei Mr. John Stevens, who defeated Sir W. Fox, referred to the charge that because he had stood as an independent candidate ho intended to join the ranks of the Opposition. Mr. Stevens now wished to say that he entered on his Parliamentary career with no intention of putting out the present Government. Tauranga, in common with other smaller places in the province, has a grievance in the fact that Auckland gets the benefit of all the work performed by prisoners sent from this district. Why Auckland should grasp everything we could never understand, and it is high time that oiher places made an effort to secure to themselves what they are fairly entitled to.—Bay of Plenty Times.
