CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS.
The report of the Civil Service examinations in October last is published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 15th inst. In the junior examination, 84 candidates underwent examination, of whom 20 passed and 64 failed. Of the candidates who failed 17 failed in four subjects, 8 in three, IS in two, 21 in one ; 25 failed in English, 33 in arithmetic, 49 in history, 41 in geography,1 in shorthand. The names of the candidates who passed belonging to this district (with the total marks) were : — Ernest Feltus Adams, Thames ; Church of England Grammar School, Para ell, 5 years; High School, Thames, 1J years—ls33. John Stuart Burns, Thames ; St. CJeorgo's Grammar School, 4 years ; Kauwaeranga School, 2 years ; WaioKaraka School, years; Thames High School, l£ years—l 267. Donald Elliot Fraser, Parnell; Miss Goodingham's, 4 years ; Mr. J. Martin's, 2i years; Auckland Collego and Grammar School, 3i years—ll39. Walter Herbert Johnston, Tautauga ; Mount Eden School, Auckland. 1J years—lo7l. •' Charles William Dowden, Auckland; Auckland Grammar School, 4 years; Mr. Pycroffs, *1 year; Ponsonby District School, 8 months—loo 2. Iu the senior examination, 30 candidates underwent examination ; 13 passed, and 17 failed to pass. Of those who*.failed,-4 failed in five subjects, 7 in four subjects, 3 in three subjects, 3 in two subjects. Thirty were examined and 12 failed in English ; 30 were examined and 10 failed in arithmetic; 30 were examined and 5 failed iu geography, 21 were examined and 1 failed in Latin, 17 were examined and 5 failed in French; 8 were examined and 6 failed in trigonometry, 28 were examined and 7 failed in algebra, 26 were examined and 13 failed in geometry, 5 were examined and 4 failed in science, 25 were examined aud 5 failed in history, 3 were examined and 3 failed in book-keeping. The following are the names of the Auckland lads who passed, with tht total marks :— Hor.icc William Colebrook, Auckland; Thames Schools, f> years; Auckland College and Grammar School, 5 years—32l6. Ernest Feltus Adams, Thames; Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, 5 years; High School, Thames, years —2357. Horace William Colebrook is the highest in the colony, E. F. Adams is the seventh.
