HENDERSON'S MILL SCHOOL.

Tiifr: Henderson's Mill school examination took place on Wednesday, 14th instant, and was held in the school-room. A full committee was present, and the school-room was well tilled with the parents and friends of the children. The Rev. Mr. Sommerville, from the Whau, examined them, and MrBaxter kindly assisted him in judging and awarding the marks. Mrs. liueston and Mr. Baxter judged the writing from their copy books, and awarded tho marks accordingly. The examination commenced at 9 a.m., and lasted without intermission until 4 p.m., excepting an interval of 15 minutes, to allow the children a run, when Mrs. Archibald Hepburn kindly treated them all to refreshments. The examiners took great pains with thccliildren especially the young ones to bring them out, and everything passed oft* well. After awarding the prizes to the winners, as under, the Rev. Mr. Sommerville addressed the children, telling them to learn all they could, and to strive to do so, for in the present age neither young men nor young women would be able to fight the battle of life so well hereafter, when they entered the world, as they would with a good sound education, and also a good moral training. He then called on them to give three cheers for Miss Hanson, their teacher, which they did heartily.—The Chairman then proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Sommerville, for his kindness in giving hh time, and taking the trouble to help to bring tHe children forward by these examinations. Mr. Baxter seconded it, and the children and their friends gave Mr. Sommervilie three hearty cheers. They then gave the chairman and committee three cheers, and broke up for the fields and woods, to their annual pic-nic. Free-hand drawing—Robert Laurie, Ist prize. 3rd Class : Map drawing—Robert Laurie, Ist prize; Percy Hurrell, 2nd prize. Free-hand drawing, Arthur Stcbbings, Ist prize. Prizes for good attendance: Eliza Laurie, Robert Laurie, Matthew Laurie, and John Laurie, Frank Malam, George Malam, and E. Malam, William Hepburn.
