NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS.

[.FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES; Monday. McGivan, the man who attempted suicide yesterday, is almost convalescent. The prospectus of the Thames Printing and Pnblishing Company is published. It has for its object the purchase of the Thames Advertiser. This company is apart from the one Mr. Speight's friends proposed to form for a new paper, CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. It now turns out that the man who was drowned on Friday from the Penguin at Akaroa was drunk, and so were the two who - went in after him. The boat lowered, and for which no rowlocks could be found, was not the Penguin's own, but one l<cing brought back from the regatta, and which was slung to the davits for convenience. The Times drops heavily on the captain for net looking after his men tetter, seeing that the lives of several hundreds of excursionists depended on the sobriety and attention to duty of the crew. [press association.] TAUPO, Monday. The ascent of the volcano of Tongariro was successfully made by Mr. Mmson, an American tourist, who, with five guides, climbed to the summit of the crater of Otiwa on Wednesday last. He describes the volcano as being an active geyser, throwing streams of boiling mud fully five hundred feet high. The interior of the cone is surrounded by some thirty or more boiling springe and sulphur steam holes. The altitude on the summit of the cone is 7650 feet; thermometer registered six degrees below zero. They were compelled, through a snow storm, to remain on the crater all night, and were nearly famished with the cold. This is the first pakeha whom the Ngatitamas have permitted to make the ascent of the sacred mountain. Others have attempted it, but were captured by the natives, and, indeed, the natives have named it Manson Tongariro. The burning mountain is in the King country, and this concession to a pakeha is strong evidence of the>r good feeling and gradual break up of animosities which have hitherto existed between the two races. NAPIER, Monday. The nominations for the Napier Handicap, Railway Stakes, and Handicap Hurdles, Hawke'a Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, close to-morrow night at S o'clock. WELLINGTON, Monday. HOKITIKA, Monday. Bain, the Corporation messenger, lias been missing since Thursday List. All efforts to discover some trace of him up to the present time have proved unavailing. There is no reason for his disappearance. The sharcmarket has been active during the last week. Wade and Sponce report sales :—Golden Fleece, l~s 6d ; Fiery Cross, 16s ; Ross Gold-miniug Co., 20s.
