At the District Court, to-day, tlie case o£ Maher v. the Corporation was heard. It was ail action to recover the sum of £200, being damages in consideration of a eoach accident caused through the alleged - neglect of the defendant. This evening the jury returned a verdict f«r the amount claimed. A meeting of the Star Boating Club was held last night to consider the advisability of instituting an amateur sculling championship for New Zealand. It was decided that the club should take initiatory steps towards the accomplishment of the object. A committee was appointed to draw up proposals, which will bo submitted to all the rowing clubs throughout the colony. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The expenditure on the Christchurcli Hospital for the year which ended June 30, was £4318 2s -id. Receipts, £558 Is Sd. The daily average number of patients was G4. These figures show a great reduction on the cost as compared with previous years. The total number of people receiving relief of all kinds on June 30, was—Males, 119; females, 179; children, 570 ; total, SGB. . There was a very heavy rainfall last week. We are now having glorious weather. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. • The Refrigeration Company have received a cablegram of the purchase of . the machines in London, and have telegraphed urging their immediate shipment. Only GOO shares are now unalloted.
