CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the CitySchools Committee took place last evening at the Nelson-street school. Mr. Gorrie in t£o chair. All the members of the committee were present. -•'■

BEKESEOP.n-STREET School.—The following is the result of the examination for standards at the above school roll at time of examination, 354 males and 363 females ; not presented, 214 males and 203 females. Standard I: Presented, 50 males and 54 females; pjssed, 31 males and 47 females; absent, 11 males and 7 females. Standard II: Presented, 61 males and 53 females; passed, 4G males and 42 females;, absent, 2 males and 4 females. Standard III: Presented, 33 males and 29 females ; passed, 2S mules and 1C females; absent, 2 males and 3 females. Standard IV: Presented, 20 males and IS females; passed, S males and 13 females; absent, 2. males. Standard "VT: Presented, 4 males and 5 females; passed; 1 male and 4 females. Standard "71: Presented, 2 males anl 1 female; passed, 2male3 andl female. Total presented, 170 males and 160females; passed, 119 males and 125 females; absent, 17 males and 14 females. Object lessons, given regularly : Singing musicrinaster attends. lElementnry science and laws of health: These subjects appear to have been carefully taught, and satisfactory anstrera obtained from the classes under examination. Drawing taughS regularly; little progress. Recitation : Satisfactory. Needlework: Very good : Discipline and drill: Good. A letter was also road from Mr. Harrison, head-master, commenting on examination returns, and grfing explanations. He complained of irregularity of attendance, and of frequent changes In subordinates, one class having had seven teachers in succession, during the past year, Mr. JKarrisson recommended that a well-cflnsidered regulation should be devised for inducing coildrento attend their own district sehool, and thus getting a fair test as to the passes of children in each district. A general discussion ensued, in which several members of committee admitted the force o£ Mr. Harrison's comments, and endorsed his views aa to the desirability of getting cbildiea of each district to attend their own district school.

Nelson-street School.—A letter was received from the Hoard recognising the necessity for the enlargement of the school, and stating. that an estimate of the cost had been included in the list of requirements. Election of Mehbeb of Committee.— Mr. Offer's letter (read at last meeting), in reference to the election of Mr. MoNab, was again considered.—After a lengthy and somewhat acrimonious discussion, the /oliowing moved by Mr. Waymouth, and seconded by Mr. Schmidt, was carried :—"That Mr. Offer's letter be acknowledged, and that he be informed that, Mr. McNab having been legally elected, no good can be attained by discussing the allegations contained in his letter."

School Punishments. — Mr. "Waymoatb. moved, " That the head-masters be informed that the committee disapproves of children being kept in school as a punishment during dinner-time, white the interval for dinner is only one hour." Mr. McMastar seconded th* motion. The Chairman stated he would seethe head-masters on the matter. He entirely objected to punishing the stomachs of thechildreiji or any mode of punishment injurious tp their health. The best way would be to keep offenders in after school hours.

School Books. —McNab said he had been requested by several of the householders to ascertain whether the resolution of the committee respecting the purchase of school books had been correctly reported » the public journals, as Mr. Brabazon, headmaster of Nelson-street scheol, had n»?e an announcement in his school to the cDiidren the very reverse of that published.—i£° Chairman said that the parents or children couis get the school-books where they pleased, ana that Mr. Brabazon must have been lablouruig under a misapprehension if he stated that "j direction of the committee, they must Dβ purchased from the teachers.
