THE YEARLING SALES OF 1880.
[from the live stock journal.] The sales which have been held this season do not indicate, that there is . much reaction from the higU.-prices of previous seasons; aud there is even an increase over last year, not in the number of yearlings sold, but in the average obtained for them. In 1S7!), 401 yearlings were sold for 86,274 guineas, or ISI> guineas each ; whereas, this year, for 451 yearlings, there is a total of 59.590 guineas, or within a fraction of 200] guineas. This is not'quite equal to the prices paid in 1870,-1377," and 1878, when 405, 530, and 523 yearlings averaged 257, 250, and 210 guineas each; but it is still sufficiently high to leave a fair profit to the sellers, whatever may bo the financial result to the buyers. Nor has this average, been reached by an equalisation of prices thou'ghout; for, whereas in 1879 only nine yearlings ran into fonr figures, there have been no fewer thun 14 sold this year, at the following rates :— Description of Yearling. Gs. Buyer IBrc by Brown Bread—Hygeia .. 2000 Mr. Jardino I Br c by Brown Bread—Voyagcuso.. 1300 Mr. .Tarilino Brc by Rosicracim— Bonny Bell.. 1700 Mr. Perkins Ch c by Hermit—Stray Shot .. 1500 Dk.of West. These 14 yearlings fetchnd, therefore, 17,315 guineas, or 1237 guineas each; and it will be noticed that three of them are by Roaicrucian, two each by Blair Athol, Brown Bread, Hermit, and Sterling, while the dams of five out of the 14 are daughters of Stockwell. These are the sires which, as might be expected,' make the best figure in the retnrn of yearling sales for the season. Rosicrucian being credited with no fewer than 22 yearlings, which have been sold for 8535 guineas, or 388 guineas each. Next to Rosicrucian comes Brown Bread, now unhappily defunct, whose 10 yearlings made 5990 guineas, or 599 guineas each ; and then follows Hermit, whose average is the best of all the sires of the season, being CO6 guineas for nine yearlings; while Sterling makes a good display, with a total of 5450 guineas, or 545 guineas each for the same number.
