It will be seen by onr report of the meeting of the Board of Governors yesterday, that Mr. Rolleston ha 3 declined the duty assigned to him by the majority of the Board, to send Home for a head-master for the Auckland College and Grammar School. The course never seemed a very reasonable one. If Mr. Rolleston had been going to England he might have made a selection, but as ho is to remain here, he could do no more than any other person—he could only ask somebody at Home to make a selection. Mr. Rolleston in his letter is not very polite. He assumes that the Governors—Masters of Arts, Uni-. versity men, members of Parliament, and all —are so grossly ignorant as not to know that ho had given up the educationportfolio to Mr. Dick.many months ago. He ought to be aware that from tho procedure it would seem that the resolution had been drawn while he was Minister for Education, that is, before the '.' investigation " commenced. The " Minister of Education " was mentioned in the draft of the resolution, but the words were altered to "Mr. Rolleston," on the suggestion of Mr. Fenton. They all knew quite well that Mi'. Rolleston was not Minister of. Education, but they expected that he would be a more suitable tool for their purpose; . The conclusion of the.matter is most lame and impotent, the Governors having resolved to ask 4 the advice of the governing'. body of the Canterbury High School. "We must make a remark upon : another matter. Mr. Brookfield said, ' "The newspaper reports are not to be relied upon. That is a matter.known to everybody. And the reports of the Herald were certainly not correct in regard to this inquiry." • A full report o£ the evidence and speeches in the investigation of the precious '' Purchas charges" could not possibly be made room for in the, columns of a uewspapcr, but so far as our reports went they were perfectly correct and entirely unbiassed. Mr. Brookfield's mind was apparently made up before the investigation began, and lie is incapable of judeing of fairness in anything connected with it. ■
