CARBON UNIVERSAL MANURE.
The above is the name of a new manure, highly spoken of and said to be wholly free frjm smell. It has been prepared by Mr. G. H.~With, "F.R.A.S., Agricultural Chemist to the Hereford Society for Aiding the Indus, trious. The following is the method of compounding the manure, and the estimate of cost. Of course the materials are estimated at English cost: — Cost (about) Take— Cwt qrs lb £. s. d. Finely sifted dry earth (any kind will do) 14 0 0 .. 0 5 0 Charcoal dust 9 0 o .. 016 0 Kainit, finely pounded .. .. 0 214.. 0 3 0 Nitrate of soda, finely pounded .. 0 2 4..0 10 0 Best Peruvian guano .. .. 13 0. .150 Best superphosphate of lime .. 1 0 0.. 0 G 0 Pare bono meal 120..0 12 0 Pure dissolved bone .. .. 120..0150 Coprolitc or phosphorite powder 1 0 0.. 0 4 6 SI 0 0 £4 10 6 The proportions given must on no account be altered in the slightest degree, and the ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed together and afterward passed through a quarter-inch sieve. The total cost, including labour, is stated to be about £3 10s per ton, "and the manure will be found equal, if not superior, to any other manure at present iu the market." A cheaper and more powerful manure, essentially the same as the " Carbon Universal," may be made by farmers themselves for all ordinary farm crops, in the following way :— „ , Cost (about) Take— Cwt qrs lb it s. d. Fine lysifted dry earth .. ..15 0 0..0 3 0 Finely sifted coal ashes .. .. 10 0 0 .. 0 3 0 Kainit, finely pounded .. .. 0 3 0. .0 3 0 Nitrate of soda, finely pounded .. 0 3 0.. 012 0 Best Peruvian guano .. .. 200..150 Best bone meal l 2 0 .. 0 12 o Pure dissolved bone .. .. 3 1 0..1 12 6 Superphosphate of lime ~ .. 100..000 Coprolito or phosphorite powder 1 0 0.. 0 4 o 35 1 0 £5 4 0 The exact proportions in this case must be adhered to. The cost is estimated at about £3 5s per ton, and the manure is said to be equal to that now sold for £S per ton. Of course prices in Now Zealand will be a little above those given. The recipes are worthy of a trial. When Josephine Ellen was being removed from the Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, after a sentence had been passed on her of six months' imprisonment with hard labour for having no lawful visible means of support, and being the keeper of a brothel, she was heard to exclaim, " Vel, vot am I to do mit my little dorgs!"
