FLIGHT OF A CHRISTCHURCH MERCHANT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Christchurcii, Monday. The business man to whom I referred last week got off to England yesterday in tha Orari. His name is W. W. Charters, of the late firm of Messrs. Draper, Charters, and Co. It is said the vessel was searched before leaving, but the pilot saw him on board. His wife and family have been living out of town for some time. Charters had an elegant house, "Said to be one of the finest furnished in town, and one mail had a bill of sale for £1000 over the furniture and effects. On realising he got about 9s in the pound, much of the property having mysteriously disappeared. Various men who confided sumsof money to Chartersfor investment are now left lamenting. A gentleman who became his partner after Draper's sudden death, recently advertised that he would not be responsible for Charters' debts, and had severed all connection with him. This gave the first inkling of anything being wrong.
