SOCIETY OF ARTS EXHIBITION.

The exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts closed last night, having been successful and well attended from the opening to the close. The demand for paintings has been good, pictures by .local artists having been sold to the amount of £209 Is. The principal demand was for the oil paintings, the water-colours not having found favour. Latterly there was a brisk demand for wax flowers, and Teutenberg's Nautilus shells found purchasers amongst the admirers of jewellery. Several artizans who have attended the exhibition have stated that they were not aware that articles of art manufacture would have been received, and have expressed themselves as determined to send something made by them on another occasion. We do not see why a separate exhibition of the kind should not be held at an early date, an exhibition of models, of carving, turning, moulding, drawings, &c. It is gratifying that the Auckland Society of Arts should have been so successful. Artists and amateurs will now be stimulated to work, and there is no doubt if they produce good work that they will receive something like an equivalent in hard cash. The success of the exhibition is greatly due to the energy of the Hon. Secretary (Mr. N. Heath), who has devoted to it much time and labour.
