CHRISTIAN CHARITY.
TO TIIE EDITOR. Sik, —There is, at this place, a sect of professing Christians who go under the name of " Plymouth Brethren," This sect holds its
■[-services twice every Sunday, in the Public :{ -a ?U. .. A few;: Sundays; ago,. I: attended - one of these services, in order to. hear these so-called.Christian Brethren. ■ Isat-tldwh in a seat, when .my next neighbour immediately got up and crossed over to the other side of the room. He seemed to be terribly horrified and disgusted with me. I could not,.think what 1 had been doing, but sat out the service, and said nothing about it at the time, but a; week.'after I met one of them, and asked him how it wa3 that the person referred to behaved so straneely » He pointed to the medals which I wear on my breast,: and said it was on account of them, "They were not my own." It seems they had been talking about the affair. Now Mr. Editor, like other men, I have my faults, and plenty of them too. but Ihaxe always tned to be honest, so I asked him whose they were, if they were not mine ? But he could not tell. I met another of them (a very; stout female) who told me that I should see all. about it in the Revelation of St. John ; so I have been looking over it, but cannot discover any information about my medals. These were presented to me from the War Office for services rendered to Her Majesty's Government in the Indian mutiny and the Maori war, and like all other old soldiers, I am proud of them, and 1 feel great contempt for people whose creed teaches them to be so uncharitable, navrow-minded, and childish as these people have shewn themselves to be. However, I shall not again expose myself to a like insult. My excuse for troubling you with this is that my character is at stake, and I wish the people here to know all about how the matter stands. Apologising for troubling you, —I am, &c., George Foden . Late 70th Regiment, generally known as Jack the Wheeler. Whangarei, February 7.
