THEATRE ROYAL.—LYDIA HOWARDE COMPANY.
There was ■ a very fair house last night at the Theatre Royal. The performance commenced with the petite comedy of "The Bonny Fishwife," and was followed by H. B. Farnie's celebrated burlesque "Nemesis," which was put . on the boards for the first time in Auckland. The plot is made up of the slenderest materials, but the various absurdities perpetrated and the ridiculous situations introduced carried the farce through successfully. The - operatic airs which were interwoven with the acting were well received, especially the scolding scene from "Madame Angot," which was capitally rendered by Miss Lydia Howarde and Mdlle. de Glorian. Mr. George Leopold, as M. Petipliax de Patoche, kept the audience continually agog with his quaint humour. The ether members of the company effectively contributed to the success of the piece. To-ni-iht (the last appearance but one) will be produced Buckstone's musical drama, "The Child of the Regiment," including all the gems from the opera "La Fille del Regimen to," and Bishop's aria, " Lo, Hear the Gentle Lark." On Monday evening Mr. Grattanßiggs, the celebrated Irish comedian, will make his first appearance on the Auckland stage, in "The Irish Dctective," in which this protean artist represents diffderent characters, each a distinct nationality. It is announced that lie will be supported by an efficient and carefully selected company.
