GREAT FIRE IN WAIKATO.
[from our own correspondent.]
Hamilton, Wednesday. There have been large bush fires for many days past in several directions round Hamilton. A fire commencing in Williamson's Swamp has swept right across the country, clearing everything before it till met by the Hamilton-Oliaupo road, to the edge of which it has swept, destroying the live quickset hedges alongside the road on Mr. R. W. Hammond's property, and where the fences have been of wire, levelling them by the destruction of the posts. Yesterday the fire crept out of the swamp on the other side of the river, and worked its way into the Hokonui bush, belonging to the Waikato Land Association, where, should it spread in this dry weather, serious loss may be occasioned.
