SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
te'awamutu. The annual meeting of householders was held on Monday, the 24th January. MrWalton having been voted to the chair, read the Commissioners' report, from which it appeared that notwithstanding the receipts from the Board oi Education r had been less than in previous years, the expenses had been kept within their income, and yet the school building had been well looked after, and some tree planting, and other permanent improvements had been made on the school ground. A sum of £1S 10s Sd was in hand to the credit of the school fund, being slightly in excess of what the Commissioners had received when they took office. In the matter of special grants, the district had been very well treated by the Board of Education, and the new school, which ■■was opened on the oth of April last, had been furnished with all necessary furniture and other requisites, and the teacher's house had been put in a thorough state of repair. Tlie Commissioners' further stated that, having been connected with the school from its commencement, they could say it was never in so good a state as at present, and had never had such a thorough teaoher as Mr. Benge, the present master; and that as Mr. Benge, who is a certificated teacher, had been appointed assistant teacher, the parents might confidently look forward to satisfactory results. It also appeared that, notwithstanding the clerical outcry of "Godless education," the Rev. J. F.■ilaudenowaa the only minister who attended to give religions instruction to such as were willing to receive it. After the report had been read, the householders present expressed themselves as highly gratified at the success which had attended the administration of affairs by the Commissioners, Messrs. Walton and Wiiistone, and after a vote of thanks for their services, they were unanimously requested to continue ill office. Mr. Winstone stated that business would prevent his continuing in office, and Mr. Walton said he should prefer the • appointment of two fresh men. There was no desire expressed to appoint a committee, and as the meeting was only called for that purpose, it accordingly lapsed. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the business.—[A Correspondent.] KAUKAPAKAPA. The annual meeting of houseliolders for the election of the school committee for the ensuing year took place in the school on the 24th January. Fifteen householders were present. Mr. R. The report, abridged, was as follows :—The present Eduea'don Act was giving every satisfaction. The school had been examined by the Inspector in the month ot June last, with a very satisfactory result. With the exception of one pupil, all the children had passed in the standards under which they were examined. The new school had been opened, and was very commodious and comfortable. The averago attendance had not quite reached the number it should do, principally owing to a little feeling in some parts of the district regarding the position of the school, which no doubt would soon die out, when it is hoped the attendance will reach the number required by the regulations to retain the services of the pupil-teacher. The retiring committee were proposed and- seconded, and there being no ; opposing candidates were declared duly elected. The names are as follow : — Messrs. Robert Sinclair (Chairman), James Drinnan, John Hutchinson, John Drinnan, Edward C. Henley, William Lee, and Gavin B. Shanks. Mr. Bonar proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was duly accorded, and the meeting separated. — [Own Correspondent, January 28.] WARE WORTH. Some time ago the householders in the district of Warkwortli petitioned the Board of Education for a separation of-the district into two divisions. The prayer of the petition was granted by the Board, and the district was, accordingly, divided into two— the Warkwortli School District, and the Dome Valley School District. On the 24th instant, at 10 o'clock, the householders in the new school district of Warkwortli met in the Warkwortli School-room, by the appointment of the Board of Education, for the election of their school committee. The householders of the Dome Valley District also attended in a body, and endeavoured in every possible way. to obstruct the Warkworth people: in carrying out the instructions of the Board and electing their own school committee. The proceedings of the meeting were such that had never before been witnessed in this settlement. Ultimately, Mr.'lf. Wilson was appointed chairman of the meeting, and amid noise, tumult, and disorder the Warkwortli- householders succeeded in electing a committee, consisting of the Rev. R. McKinuey and Messrs. Clayden, King, Cutler, L. Thompson, N. Wilson, and Warin. As appointed by the Board of Education, the committee met at 12 o'clock, and nnanimonsly elected the Rev. R. McKinney chairman,-' Mr. Sanderson was appointed secretary, and Mr. N. Wilson treasurer. The comuuttee agreed to raise, independently, of the Government funds, a salary to pay for the services of the secretary. I understand that after the election of the school committee by the Warkwortli householders, the Dome Valley people met in one of the rooms of the Warkworth school'buildings and passed resolutions condemnatory of the action of the Board o£ Education in separating the district.- —[Own. Bishop was voted to the chair-, and he then, in his capacity of chairman of the outgoing committee, made a report of their proceedings during the past year, and presented the balance-sheet, duly audited. This showed the receipts to have been £79 19s 6d, and the expenditure £77 14s, thus leaving a in the bank of £2 5s 6d. It' was stated that the most important matters carried out by the committee were the apppointment of Mrs. Anderson as teacher, thus very much raising the educational standard of the school, and the effecting of certain repairs and additions to the teacher's residence, at a. cost of £60, which amount was granted by the Board for that purpose. The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted.— The meeting then proceeded to ballot foi the new committee, and the following persons were declared duly elected.:—Messrs. H. \\ . Bishop, Bryers, Bcazley, Menaes, Herbert, McLeod, and Cochrane.— At the first meeting of the new committee held shortly afterwards, Mr. H. W.
