•• London, January 31. ] The greatest alarm, amounting to a panic, prevailed for a day or two in Manchester, owing to the receipt of information by the police, which led to the belief that attempts were about to be made by Fenians to destroy several more prominent public buildings ,in the city. These have now been placed under strong guards of military and police. Up to the present time no violent act has been committed. i . At a meeting of the Union and English, Scottish, and Alistraliaii Banks, the share-: holders were jubilant over the satisfactory reports presented. • The crews of the Oxford and Cambridge Universities have commenced practising for; the annual acquatie contest. February I. News of a discouraging character has been received from Sir George P. Colley in connection with tb.3 Boer rebellion. His Excellency reports that the Boers have, been Largely reinforced, and.now overwhelmingly outnumber the available colonial troops. The reports that the Boers have been guilty of atrociously butchering the wounded - colonials who fell into their hands is officially contradicted. It has been ascertained that the 3' treat prisoners humanely. . Their attitude, however, is intensely warlike. Her Majesty Queen Victoria sent a cable message of condolence to Governor Colley upon the recent reverse sustained by the troops in the Boer rebellion, and the serious loss by the death of so many officers of his staff, mentioning especially Colonel Deane , and Captain Inman. The message contains words of encouragement and hope.
