AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT WELLINGTON.
[by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Saturday. The Australian cricket match, commenced at noon to-day. ' The weather was fine, the ground hard. There was a fair wicket, but out-fielding was very lumpy. About 1000 persons were present. The Wellington team won the toss, and elected to go to the wickets. Kennedy and Brown went first to face the bowling of Spofforth and Palmer. The innings closed at 4 o'clock for S2. The bowling and fielding of the Australians were greatly admired. The Wellington team took the field after a short interval. Groube and Spofforth batting. Armitage and Francis bowling. Spofforth drove Francis for a single, and cut Armitage for 3. When seven was reached, Groube put an easy one to Salmon, third man, which was accepted. 1—2 —/. Murdoch filled the gap, but after receiving a couple of balls, was smartly taken m the slips by Marchant off Francis. 2 0 7. Macdonnell joined Spofforth, but was run out in. attempting to steal a bye. 3—0—13. Slight followed him, and a good _ stand , was made. The bowling was changed again and again, but without the desired effect, the batsmen acting on the defensive. The field were now treated to a deal of leatherhunting'. When time was called Spofforth and Slight were still at the wickets, the score standing at 64. When the score stood at 60, Spofforth was let off by longstop.
