I We notice from the Nco-Caledonien, that Mr. Gillies, brother of Judge Gillies, has just entered into partnership with M. Pelletier, late Mayor of Noumea, in order to carry on business as general merchants. The Waikato Mail says:—"An orchard belonging to Mr. Asher, of Duke-street, has been robbed for two years in succession, and he has been wholly unable to trace the offenders. In order to prevent a similar misfortune lie has purchased in Auckland, and brought up to Cambridge, one of the finest samples of a mastiff that we have seen for many a day. It is a do?, one year and nine months old, and when in full condition weighs nearly 1301bs. Its height at the shoulder is 2 feet 9 inches, and it is altogether about as awkward a customer as a fruit-stealer would wish to encounter. By ncxt season Mr. Asher will have built on the ground and enclosed it, and ' Bronto,' as the animal is named, will do duty as watchman. We hardly think his owner will miss much fruit when such a deputy is about."
