ONEHUNGA BOROUGH.
Tjie ordinary meeting of Council was held on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor (Mr. Blakey), Messrs. Broadfoot, Codiin, Earle, Hartnett, Hastie, Hills. Jackson, Kelsall, and Tapp. Minutes and correspondence were read.
Survey.—A letter from the Chief Surveyor was read. He said, in answer to an application from the Council, that in consequence of a decrease in his staff he was unable at present to name any time when the promised standard survey of the town would be undertaken. Main' Road.—On the motion of Mr. Codlui it was agreed to inform the General Government that the sum awarded last year for repairs to the main road had all been expended, and requesting that a sum of £300 at the least be .allotted for this season's requirements. Contractor's Dispute. — This matter again came up by the receipt of a letter from Messrs. Jackson and Russell, enclosing an order from the contractor, in favour of Messrs. Morrin. for £200, and requesting the Council to accept the same.—Mr. J. D. Jackson moved, "That the writers be informed the Council declined to accept this order, that they had refused to accept any orders from the contractor, having been ready at any time since the° 10 th May, 1880. to pay the contractor the full amount lie was entitled to under the engineer's certificate." This order also contained a request to cancel a previous order given to Mr. Fleming for £250. A letter from Mr. C. C. Fleming sanctioning the withdrawal of this order in his favour which had been previously lodged, but not accepted, was also read. The motion to send the above reply to Messrs. Jackson and Russell's letter was lost on division by six to four, and the final result was that no reply of any sort was ordered. On Mr. Hastie taking part in this discussion Mr. J. D. Jackson again called the Mayor's attention to the fact that being one of the contractor's sureties, he (Mr. Hastie} was disqualified from taking any part in the discussion, but the Mayor again ruled that Mr. Hastie could sit and vote until some competent Court had pronounced him disqualified. Mr. Hastie subsequently moved that a committee be appointed to look into this matter ol his alleged disqualification, whereupon Messrs. Broadfoot, Codiin, Jackson, and Kelsall left their seats, declining to recognize in any way Mr. Hastie moving in a matter when, in their opinion, he was disqualified. The majority of the Council remaining, however, agreed to an amendment to meet in committee of the whole on Monday next. After passing accounts, the Council adjourned.—[Own Correspondent, February I.]
