The New Zealand Times gives the following particulars concerning therecently elected member for the Nelson Suburbs in the General Assembly ? —'* It is so long since Mr, Collins retired from politics, after a comparatively brief connection with them, that he has dropped out of political remembrance. Those, however, who do know, will recollect that he took his seat as a staunch Provincialist, but subsequently changed, his views, and ardently supported Abolition. He held a prominent position in the Stafford party, and gave considerable promise** as 1 a : rising politician, so much so that he was on one .or two occasions mentioned in connection with a seat on the Government Benches. He was one of the very few, including Mr. Reader Wood and Air. Gillies, now Judge Gillies, who persistently opposed Mr. Vogel's public works policy, and during that _ notable session. was remarkable for his bitter attacks on Mr. Vogel and Mr. Fox, which drew telling retaliation from them. Mr. Collins is a highly educated gentleman, ana was distinguished as an' athlete in his younger davs. Personally he is very popular, is a moderate Conservative, and will generally support the policy of the present Ministry.
