THE GOLD FIELDS.
■'"•',.-..•■-■ ■"' :—" —* _r — ~ • ■■:. •■-■■■' [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] : Thames, Saturday. Southern : Crosb. —At present the. operations in this mine are confined-'to the small leaders diecovered in tho spur of the hill, at the back of the. TJ.P..A. ehaft. The old-winze on the Tookey lode has been cleaned put for a depth of about 20 feet belosv the floor of the battery level, at which point the manager has started prospecting on the hanging-wall leader. The latter has been driven upon seaward until it janctioned •with a small cross leader. At this juncture gold'was met withj and several pounds of Mice specimen stone have "been obtained. The manager has now started sinkiag on the juHctionof-the Ttwp leaders, and if the gold is: found to continue downwards a rise will be 'put up everheard to the.battery level, after which sinking on the iunction will be resumed. So far, the quartz from both these leaders has proved payable, and there seems to be; a prospect that' they, will yield a considerable quantity of crushing staff. Stoping operations have • been started on the cross lode discovered in the f ootwall of the lode worked by the late Tookey tributers. ~ About 40 feet of stopes have been opened up on this leader, and along the 'back "of "these stopes it will averageabout six inches thick. The ground is r easily worked,- so that, although the quartz is not very rich, it gives remunerative returns, and in tnrning it over there is always''- a prospect_of.. coming upon something better. One or two men are also employed prospecting on 'the small leader in which specimens were obtained just above ;the Alburnia tramway. _A cross-cut below :the level of the tramway has intersected this leader, and now it is being: driven upon. The quartz showing ia this leader has a, very •white appearance, but, notwithstanding, indications for gold have been met with. -... Cr/RE.—ln this mine the Nc. 7 lode is being driven upon from both sides of the cross-cat on the Nα 2 level. In the eastern face the lode is split up, there being two distinct leadera=-_flne..ioiL" the footwall and another on the hangingwalL-i; In the western drive the lode is about "a" foot' thick. The lode still maintains its old characteristics, and is very mullocky ; but this is a special feature about it, and, as a irule, the more clayey it is the larger the percentage of gold it'contains.. The footwall portion of the lode in the'western drive is nothing but a band of dark'blue clay, and ye\ this is considered the best part of it. The drives as yet havo onlybeen extended" a " short distance, but fckey will be pushed forward as rapidly as possible, and a trial crushing of quartz taken oat. GOLB RETURNS FOR THE WEEK.

Since the, last cleaning up 360 tons of general stnff with a few pounds o£ picked stone have been crushed for the return of 3050z8. retorted gold. Nothing has occurred in the mine the laet day or two. Hape Ceekk.—Mr. Greonville, the proprietor of this mine, lodged 700z3. 12dwts. retorted gold at the bank, the produce of an interim retorting. Mr. Greenville has been crushing his quartz at the battery connected •with the mine,-but it ia probable this battery will not be worked in future owing to the increased charge for water power. The battery is closely situated to the water race, -and owing to this fact absorbs a large quan«
tity of water, there being only a very slight ( pressure on the turbine. Kr/BANOT.— Jenkins and party, who have a section of this mine on tribute, have crushed 25 tons of general staff for the I return of 43ozb. 4dwts. melted gold.
