Tub basis of a thorough and effective settlement is now being made i a tbe Upp er Thames by the settlers who have already taken up sections o£ land at Te Aroha and it is extremely likely that withiu a short tims men occupying larger areas and havine the command of a larger amount of capital will be in the same neighbourhood. These two closes will be ot mutual aßs i ß t, noe Ihe value of the allotments of the smaller settlers will be increased by the occupation of tho larger part of the district, and when not busy on their nwn allotments they will readily obtain employment from the large farmers. These on the other hand will be ■ benefited by having always at hand a good L supply of labour. In these circumstances > and considering the fertile nature of the soil' s the advancement of the district must be rapid' l But there are other thinss co-operating *tm > the benefit of the Upper Thames at present r We presume there is no cUubt that the ; Government will proceed with the formation t of the line from Hamilton to the head of the _ navigation, so that the Upper Thames will have a railway through it, and first-class , means of communication either with Shortland and Grahamstown, or with Hamilton And if it be true that a goldfield is about to* 3 be opened on the slopes of To Aroba, then ■ indeed no possible favouring circumstance - will be wanting. We presume the Patetere i country will next be thrown open by those r who secure it, and in turn that district wil! 3 derive much advantage from the settlement t of Te Aroha. There is, indeed, every likelij hnod that the settlement of the Upper Thames and of Patetere will lead to the ' opening of tbe interior and western districts s of this province, and that a continuous ' progress iu settlement will be a distinguish- * ing feature of the next few years.
