NORTHCOTE.
A meeting of the church committee of St. John the Baptist was held on Wednesday evening, after a service at which the Rev. J. Bates officiated, as incumbent of the district. The following gentlemen were present :— Messrs. Hammond and Denby (churchwardens), Major Banton, Messrs. Matthews, sen. and j an., Mahew, Bradney, and Roach. A report of the previous three months was given by Mr. Hammond, showing the church Bo be on a satisfactory basis, with a good sum in hand, and entirely free from any debt whatever. A choir had been organised, and arrangements are beiug made to procure an organ melodion. The church has been well ventilated, and other improvements are engaging the attention of the committee, particularly that of securing a frontage to the main road as land is advancing in value and houses increasing in number; that although the church is on a very good road, within one allotment of the main road, it is desirable that it sheuld not be shut off by houses which are now beginning to spring up around the little church. A resolution was passed granting leave to the Rev. Mr. Morley, of the Wesleyan Mission, to use the church for afternoon servio». The meeting closed by a vote of thanks to Mr. Bates, being the first committee meeting connected with the church in this new and rising suburb. The walk along the main road passing by Major Benton's, and leading towards Rowen Hill, displayed one of the grandest scenes by moonlight, the whole of Auckland with its numerous lights aoross the water standing out in panoramic effect.
